Faith like Potatoes

Childhood memories.... I am so fortunate to have good ones. They weren't all good at times.. but let's keep on a positive note for the moment.... One memory I have is waking up early in the morning and making my mom breakfast in bed. I knew enough to boil a mug of water in the microwave and add 2 teaspoons of instant coffee. I got toast with jam and put it on a nice tray and took it up to my mom to surprise her for Mother's Day. She was so gracious to sip that cold nasty tasting coffee and hold a smile as she ate the cold toast. This year my parents came down to visit for Mother's Day weekend. Bella ( with my mom's help) made me a real cup of coffee with Italian sweet cream and sugar.. yum and I was able to enjoy it in bed! What a treat. We went to church and then came home and I enjoyed a nice 1hr nap. Ahh... nothing like a Sunday siesta! When I woke up, we packed up the car with our picnic gear and went to West Seattle. Oscar came a across a great little park on the opposite side of Alki Beach, so it's more family friendly and quiet. The view was gorgeous. I love the ocean. I have taken for granted that I live near the water.... I love sound of crashing waves. We think we spotted a whale at one point. The view was great. We set up our croquet set as well as ladder ball and had a fabulous time together.
Later that evening, we came home and watched a movie " Faith Like Potatoes" a really inspiring movie to watch if you have a chance! It's a great storyline. I can't help but think that many times our faith is like that. We plant "potatoes" it takes time, water and sunshine to help them grow, but even when the odds are against us, our Father is the great Farmer... Nothing is impossible for Him. He can make himself Glorious in our weaknesses or our lack of water or sunshine and can grow a plentiful harvest!! Speaking of planting potatoes.. I just told a good friend of mine the story about planting potatoes. As a child I was very stubborn. When I was told "no", I wanted to know why. Many times I didn't feel the answer I was given was adequate enough to satisfy my curiosity.... one time I asked if I could plant a potato garden. My parents said no because we didn't have the garden space. I didn't like their response, so I went out in the garage, snuck a potato out of the sack and dug a hole under the front living room bay window. Right next to my dad's flower bed. I stuck the potato in the ground and every once in a while, I would remember to water it (without letting my dad see me). Eventually I checked back and sure enough- I had potatoes growing under our living room window!! God calls us to plant seeds. The "soil" may not always be the best or it may not be in the ideal location to receive the Son, but He is faithful to cultivate and water and give the seeds the proper care in order for them to grow. We don't need to know all the answers to our "why" questions, we just need to be faithful and He will complete the work He started in His time.
